The best and worst of the 2011 Golden Globes.

17 Jan

The stars lined the red carpet of the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards in Hollywood last night.

Drama was everywhere, from flouncy tulle gowns to vivid, jewel toned colours.  Many stars opted for a winter nude hues of pink blush, taupe and beige.  The main trend for the night was emerald coloured dresses, worn by Black Swan star, Mila Kunis, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angelina Jolie.  The best green dress was an Atelier Versace gown worn by none other than Jolie.

Her approach is elegant and sophisticated.  She lets the gown speak for itself and isn’t weighed down by fussy accessories.

Here is the top 5:

5. Megan Fox looks feminine and beautiful in a Giorgio Armani Privé dress and Brian Atwood shoes.

4. Red carpet darling, Anne Hathaway shines in an unconventional sequined Giorgio Armani Privé gown.  Styled by Rachel Zoe, she finishes her look with jewels from Van Cleef & Arpels.

3. Glee star Dianna Agron looked youthful and breathtaking in this nude J. Mendel gown.

2. Best actress in a comedy/musical nominee, Emma Stone looked amazing in this minimalist Calvin Klein collection dress.

1. Mad Men beauty, Christina Hendricks was ravishing in a red Romona Keveza gown.  Unlike her Mad Men co-star, January Jones, the simple asymetrical silhouette is flattering and not too revealing.  People can argue that she was not the best dressed, but her glamourous approach to the red carpet brings back images of curvaceous vixens from the silver screen.

5. January Jones doesn’t pull off the dramatic red colour of this Atelier Versace gown.  The dramatic plunging neckline pulls attention away from the fringe of the dress.  This would have looked a lot better on her fair complection in the original dove-gray colour.  Her vintage Lauren Bacall-inspired hair was without a doubt, the best hair at the Globes this year.

4. Olivia Wilde wore a quincenera dress, alright, Marchesa ball gown and Christian Louboutin heels that look like they were stolen from a lady of ill repute.  Fire your stylist, immediately!

3. Helena Bonham Carter is known for her unconventional style.  Her mistmatched shoes and deconstructed gown make a big statement, and it’s not a good one.

2. Michelle Williams underwhelms in this daisy-printed Valentino gown. Daisy print and Valentino in the same sentence. It’s a crime against fashion.

1. She might have won a Golden Globe for her performance as Nina Sayers in Black Swan, but she’s a red carpet loser.  The shiny pink fabric looks cheap and the colour is horrible for her complection.  The draping does a disservice to her baby bump and makes her look like a big pile of tacky curtains.  The biggest crime of this Viktor and Rolf dress is the cheap-looking red flower nestled in the middle.  The colour palette is all wrong.  However, even if the gown would have been a black and white combination, the detail of the flower is completely misplaced.  I love her dainty Tiffany & Co. jewels, which unfortunately don’t compliment or enhance her frock.  Her hair resembles a deflated prom updo, which does nothing for her angular and striking bone structure.  Truly a style disaster.  Hopefully she will make up for it at the Academy Awards next month.
